Herding: Jim Buzzard, Buzzard Australian Cattle Dogs
Jim Buzzard’s passion for the Australian Cattle Dog (ACD) began as a young ranch hand on a cattle farm in the early 1960s. He learned quickly that the better the quality of the dog, the more work it could do and the longer it would be around to do it! As an active cattle rancher, Jim’s passion for the correct Australian Cattle Dog continues to this day.
The very first Herding Excellent (HX) title ever awarded went to a Buzzard ACD named Ch. Buzzards Red Tubs. That dog also sired 90 champions, a record for Australian Cattle Dogs that has yet to be matched. The breeding program has also produced close to 400 AKC champions.
Jim and his daughter, Theresa Buzzard-Couch, and grandson, Colston Couch, were some of the first breeders to become a part of the AKC Breeder of Merit program. Jim has hosted a National Specialty and has traveled to Australia several times not only to evaluate new breeding stock for his program, but also to train local breed clubs in the formation of their herding programs. Jim also hosted the first AKC Herding Trial ever held, in 1990.
Buzzard Australian Cattle Dogs are living in many countries, proving their excellence by winning in conformation and performance events. Jim and his family have assisted many in the sport, including mentoring newcomers to herding and helping junior handlers learn how to show ACDs in the conformation ring. Jim is an AKC-licensed Australian Cattle Dog conformation judge and herding trial judge.
The Summer 2014 issue of ACD Spotlight has been released! Included in this issue you will find the copies of old photos that are in my original photo album published in 2001. Each upcoming issue will show about 100 photos from this album. Hope you enjoy.
Next issue will feature updates on all of the herding champions.
